With 45 million annual passengers expected to travel through Sea-Tac Airport by 2021, the Port of Seattle commissioned a consolidated Rental Car Facility (RCF) to meet the current and future demands of the traveling public. All Airport-related rental car operations will be located in the City of SeaTac on a 23-acre site adjacent to the Airport, bounded by International Boulevard, State Route (SR) 518 and South 160th Street.
The RCF is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) sustainable demonstration project and sustainable asset management project for Sea-Tac Airport. The facility will expand the size and capacity rental car facilities and provide a more efficient and competitive operating environment, able to process 12,000 to 14,000 rental cars daily. The final facility will have five floors and 2.1 million total square feet of space.
Shen Consulting was selected as the prime consultant to provide primary project management/LEED certification services for the Consolidated Rental Car Facility GC/CM project and several supporting components for facility activation:
- Main Terminal Improvements (MTI) – this involved the preparation of the airport main terminal curbsides to install new bus curbing operation to support new rental car facility buses that will transport passengers to and from the airport main terminal. In addition to the curbing operations, a new signage program was designed and installed to support deplaning passenger way-finding to the rental car bus operations and also passenger way finding from the rental car bus operations to the ticketing level for passenger check in.
- Facility Activation: Shen Consulting provided for facility activation by preparing a full facility activation plan and then coordinated with Airport operations staff to implement a full building turnover up to the day of grand opening of the facility in the spring of 2012.
